Course overview

The highlight of this module is the individualised nature ��Ƶ learning and assessment experience. The module enable practitioners (and where appropriate employers) to select the subject of learning and negotiate the assessment to ensure that the learning experience is directly relevant and of value to their individual specialist area of practice or the practice of others. Students will be supported on this individual journey to produce new insights to inform practice.

The module seeks to give practitioners the opportunity to undertake a period of advanced study on a project which draws upon contemporary issues as relevant to their specialist area of practice. Students have the opportunity to negotiate and agree the precise focus of a project through developing a learning plan and tutorial support with a project supervisor (and where appropriate employer). Through engagement with a contemporary issue in a specialist area and support ��Ƶ project supervisor, the student will produce an assessable piece of work that is directly relevant to professional practice of self or others. The product for assessment may include (but is not limited to) an essay, training materials, written article or a presentation.

The topic of study may include any contemporary issue, examples include (but are not limited to):

High profile inquiries;
Proposed and new legislation and policy;
Organisational change;
An aspect of service provision;
Service user and carer perspectives;
Diverse communities.

The module encourages blended learning and candidates can utilise direct teaching, workshop events, independent study, E-learning, direct practice experience and in-house training to acquire learning.

20 Credit Module at Level 7

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

Demonstrate an ability to plan and complete an advanced study based on a topic of particular interest to them
Provide a clear rationale for the subject chosen
Draw conclusions in relation to the impact on practice and/or career development
Critically explore the complexity of relevant and contemporary issues of practice in their chosen topic of interest
Critically evaluate and show a comprehensive understanding of research as it applies to their topic of interest.

Entry requirements

All candidates need to ensure that they have a relevant undergraduate degree at 2:2 or above, or evidence ��Ƶir ability to study at postgraduate level.

Under the School’s Centre for CPD portfolio, this module can be completed as standalone or towards one ��Ƶ following courses:

Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management in Social Work and Social Care
Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development and Practice
Postgraduate Certificate in Specialist Child Care Practice
Postgraduate Certificate in Specialist Practice with Adults
Masters in Professional Development and Practice
Masters in Social Pedagogy Leadership

Candidates may commence this module at any time during the academic year. The learning duration is negotiated through a learning agreement but it is not expected to be more than two semesters.

Through the engagement with a contemporary issue in their specialist area of practice, students are required to produce an assessable reflective piece of work that is directly relevant to professional practice of self or others. The product for assessment may include (but is not limited to) an essay, training materials, written article or a presentation. The precise nature ��Ƶ reflective assessment will be negotiated with a project supervisor to ensure it meets the learning outcomes.
Bespoke courses can be commissioned and the delivery schedule and location will be negotiated. The module may also be commissioned to add an element of assessment to in house training and professional development activities.
