Dr Frank J Harrington
Frank is a qualified BSL/English Interpreter with over 30 years experience in the field. He teaches on both the undergraduate and postgraduate BSL/Deaf Studies programmes here at the university. His work focuses primarily on English Linguistics, Translation Theory and Interpreting Theory and Practice, although he also teaches Deaf and Disability Politics, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and Disability Studies.
Frank has authored, co-authored, and edited a number of publications (books, book chapters and journal articles) in Interpreting and Translation Studies. His co-authored book 'Interpreting Interpreting: Studies and Reflections on Sign Language Interpreting' was the first of its kind to look at the practicalities of BSL/English Interpreting as a discipline within a UK context. He was instrumental in the establishment 海角视频 National Registers of Communication Professionals with Deaf People (NRCPD), and has worked closely with them since their inception in 2005 to promote BSL/English Interpreting as a profession. He is also a former board member of both the NRCPD and Signature (the leading awarding body for deaf communication and language qualifications in the UK).
In addition to his work in BSL and Deaf Studies, Frank has most recently gained his PhD in Christian Theology, with a study of Roman Catholic Canon Law in the 21st Century. He is an experienced EDI trainer, and has delivered training around the UK and abroad for the past 20 years. He is also a celebrated musician and a published composer, holding a degree in performance and composition from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
